Two Bean Chakalaka

A traditional South African relish that can be treated as a condiment, side dish OR even a main meal.


  • 3tbs cooking oil

  • 1 onion, chopped

  • 2 cloves of garlic, chopped

  • 1 green pepper, diced

  • 4 green chillies, chopped

  • 2tsp curry powder (mild)

  • 100g green beans, cut into 3s

  • 3 medium carrots, peeled and grated

  • 400g chopped tomatoes

  • 1x 410g tin of beans in tomato sauce

  • Salt and pepper to season


  1. Heat oil in a heavy saucepan and fry onions, garlic, pepper and chillies together for 3-5 minutes.

  2. Add the curry powder and fry for another 3-5 minutes.

  3. Add the green beans, carrots and tomatoes and simmer for 10 minutes until the vegetables are soft.

  4. Add the baked beans and simmer for few minutes.

  5. Remove from the heat and season with salt and pepper.

  6. Serve with meat or pap.
