Chakalaka Bread

This is an absolute “MUST TRY” recipe. It is spicy, moist and delicious!


  • 1 cup white bread flour

  • 3 tbsp baking powder

  • ½ tsp paprika

  • ½ tsp thyme

  • 2 tsp mixed dried herbs

  • ¼ cup olive oil

  • 1x 400g tin mild chakalaka

  • 2 eggs (beaten)

  • 1 medium onion (chopped)

  • ½ cup cheddar cheese (grated)


  1. Preheat oven at 180ºC.

  2. Sift the flour, baking powder and paprika together.

  3. In a separate bowl combine the rest of the ingredients.

  4. Fold into the flour until everything is combined. (Be careful not to over mix the ingredients.)

  5. Turn into a greased, medium-sized loaf pan and bake for 20 to 30 minutes, or until a knife pulls out cleanly.

  6. Allow to cool for 10min before turning out onto a to cool further.
